Thursday: Get fired from the Moo. Don't really understand why.

Friday: Eat something bad, spend the whole night with diarrhea and puking.

Saturday: More of same from Friday.

Sunday: Still more of same, possibly a little better.

Spring Break hasn't really started yet, and it's already the worst I've ever had.

Okay, so, I figure this was a big deal, so I oughta let the interwubs hear about it.

I got scammed. Big time. /story

A college student could always use some more money, so I decided to sell my PS2 and all the accessories I have. It's a lot of stuff: the system, 4 games, 2 controllers, and 2 Dance Dance Revolution dance pads. Lol. I posted an ad on Craigslist, since I didn't feel like losing 10% to eBay. I got a few responses, and a lady named "Debra Brown" said she'd buy the whole package for $200, 50 bucks more than what I was offering. So, like, heck yeah.

First red flag: her grammar was non-existent. But, I shrugged it off to normal internet stupidity. Hah. To get her money to me, she said I needed to sign up on this website called AlertPay: kind of like PayPal, but... different. I thought this was definitely fishy, so I checked the site out, and it actually was a legit way to move money between buyers and sellers. Okay, so I agreed to sell. It goes downhill from here.

I started clicking links she gave me... big mistake. These links were to an e-mail which were to an AlertPay mediator. In reality, it was the same person under a fake address. The e-mails had links and AlertPay icons and blah blah blah, but the same bad grammar. Again, I shrugged it off. So, they send me a fake e-mail, stating they "recieved" my money and are waiting for the tracking number of my package to verify, and then they'd give me my money.

D'oh. The lady also had a FedEx account, so she sent me a shipping label at no cost to me. The shipping address should have stopped me, but.. oh well. The package was going to Nigeria. NIGERIA. Yeah. I'm stupid. I send the package, I verify the tracking number, and then my "fake" AlertPay guy (who is "Debra Brown") says my money will arrive Thursday morning. I didn't work or have class, so I stayed home all day. Can you guess what happened? Yeah, the money never arrived. When I sent an e-mail asking why, I got an automatic reply stating that that address had been deleted. Score.

I sent another e-mail to AlertPay, who let me know that all their e-mails end with "@alertpay.com". My fake one ended with "@consultant.com". Apparently, this has happened hundreds of times before. I had been taken for a serious ride.

What have I learned? Well, other then "Don't send shit to Africa," I'm not sure. Don't believe those with bad grammar? Only sell stuff locally? That the internets is full of stupid people? That I'm one of them? I dunno.

So it's still not okay. I got VERY angry. I'm still a little steamed over it. But Paul bought "Guitar Hero" and... well... how can I not be happier after rocking so much in the past few days? :)

RIP Maynard Ferguson (1928-2006)

Geez, a god among commoners. This man could play the trumpet like nobody else. Double-C was like a cakewalk. My dad used to play his albums, and he most likely was the reason I fell into loving jazz so much. He once came to Lehigh Senior High (15 minutes from my house) to perform, and I've always regretted missing that concert.

Just go listen to "Gotta Fly Now". Or his version of "Birdland". Or even the whole M.F. Horn #4 & 5 album. I'll miss him, I know that.

Yearly Update

Here's that post-every-3-months that let's me keep my LJ. Hurray hurrah.

http://www.last.fm/user/Thryn7686/

Post your top ten bands/artists, the first song you heard of theirs, the song that made you fall in love, and your current favourite.

1) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
First song I heard: "In This Home On Ice". My Calc II professor played music during class, and this came on in the middle of him teaching arc length.
I fell in love when I heard: "Is This Love?" At first listen, it's catchy. Then you keep listening to the lyrics... and they become creepy but funny.
My current favorite: Still "In This Home On Ice".

2) Wolf Parade
First song I heard: "I'll Believe in Anything". I was told to buy their album, so when I found it for $8, I snapped it up and listened to this track.
I fell in love when I heard: "I'll Believe". That first listen had me signed, sealed, and delievered.
My current favorite: Probably "Grounds for Divorce".

3) Led Zeppelin
First song I heard: God... probably Stairway, but the first song that I knew was Zeppelin was "Immigrant Song", when watching School of Rock.
I fell in love when I heard: Hmm... I'd say "Black Dog".
My current favorite: It's a cross between "Houses of the Holy" and "Trampled Under Foot". But almost any Zeppelin song can make me smile. Zeppelin introduced me into the world of classic rock, so they oughta be first on this list.

4) The Arcade Fire
First song I heard: I bought the album early in '05, started with the first track "Neighborhood #1"... and promptly couldn't stand it. But something kept me interested in the back of my mind. Sooooo...
I fell in love when I heard: That summer, I delivered pizzas, so I started listening to the album again. And I LOVED IT ALL. For some reason, I couldn't believe I didn't like it before. I listened to that album through hundreds of delieveries.
My current favorite: Cross between "Wake Up" and "Rebellion", although "My Heart is An Apple" is awesome. I listen to their albums so much in the car, they honestly oughta be first on this list. They brought me into the realm of indie rock, which I'm still exploring, and couldn't be happier with it.

5) Sufjan Stevens
First song I heard: Whatever the first track is. Sufjan's title can be scary-long.
I fell in love when I heard: "Come On! Feel the Illinoise!" and "Chicago".
My current favorite: I recently been looping "They are Night Zombies!". At one point you can hear 6 or 7 or hundred different distinct parts playing at once, and I love it!

6) Modest Mouse
First sone I heard: "Float On", along with most of America.
I fell in love when I heard: "3rd Planet", "Gravity Rides Everything" and "Dark Center of the Universe" in a row.
My current favorite: I honestly haven't listened to Modest Mouse in awhile. I got stuck on "Lives" for a month or so and moved on to a new album.

7) Broken Social Scene
First song I heard: "Our Faces Split the Coast in Half", just because it's the first track on the newest album.
I fell in love when I heard: Oh, definitely "7/4 (Shoreline)". The fact it's in that different meter, and the purely awesomenest just sold me. I looped that one track for days and days.
My current favorite: Still "7/4", although "Swimmers" makes for a good break.

8) The White Stripes
First song I heard: "Fell in Love with a Girl". I saw that video and was blown away by the rockin' drums and the funky Legos.
I fell in love when I heard: Hm, I dunno. I always liked them, but never bought an album until Get Behind Me Satan. That whole album had me sold.
My current favorite: "The Denial Twist", by a long shot.

9) Blue Man Group
First song I heard: How about their live Vegas show? Would that count? Because it was fucking amazing!
I fell in love when I heard: Same as above. Everyone should see their show as these once in their life. I went out and bought Audio in the gift shop.
My current favorite: "Rods and Cones". My favorite track since the bought the album.

10) The Futureheads
First song I heard: "Decent Days and Nights". Another summer album from my pizza delivery times. I listened to Arcade Fire, White Stripes, and this for 3 months.
I fell in love when I heard: "Decent Days" for sure, but also "Danger of the Water". The whole album races around at breakneck speed, and this one track is the only one to slow it down. And it's a capella.
My current favorite: Gotta be "Hounds of Love". Even though it's a cover, their version is one of my favorite indie rock love songs.

Thanks if you read all that. :)

After spending an hour on the phone with tech support, my only foresee-able course of action is to send my laptop in to Gateway for repairs.

Thank god for a 3 year warranty... but I have no idea how long this is going to take.
The ten persons listed below have been selected as passengers on a space ship for flight to another planet, because tomorrow the planet Earth is doomed for destruction. Go figure. Due to changes in cargo, it has now been determined that only seven may go. Which three do you leave behind? (Note: coed = female)

1) An accountant
2) The accountant's pregnant wife
3) A liberal arts coed
4) A professional basketball player
5) An intelligent female movie star
6) A black medical student
7) A famous novelist
8) A biochemist
9) A 70-year old clergyman
10) An armed policeman

Summer Daze, or, There's Goes the Neighborhood.

Been a long/short few weeks. Somehow, I completely forgot the last day of my summer class was on Wednesday, so I went in expecting another lesson, and was handed a final exam. Gosh, don't I love surprises... But the class is over, and that's relief. An easy A or B.

With my last paycheck, I went on a slight shopping spree... more shirts and jeans, of course. Amanda Mo-ley! sent me a gift card to AE, which resulted in some kick-ass jeans. (sorry though, no pics, Amanda. It's hard to take a picture of my own ass...) I also took a trip to Best Buy... bad idea with money in my pocket. I got a radio adapter for my iPod, so I can listen to all my music through my car stereo. It's rather... annoying, though. Most of the time, unless I'm holding it over my passenger seat, I get lots of static. Sigh.

Espacing from the World of Warcraft, I bought a new game, and it's a console one at that! I nabbed Katamari Damacy for the PS2, for only $20. If you own a PS2, you need to buy this game. You basically have a sticky ball that you roll around, picking stuff. And yes, it's Japanese, and weird, but it's strangely incredibly fun. You start off with push-pins, cookies, and matchboxes. By the end of the game, I was picking up giant fish, Godzilla, entire markets, houses, telephone towers, islands, and a tornado or two. A sequel called "We Heart Katamari" is coming out in a few months, and I'll certainly be getting it.

Turning to music, I've added lots of CDs. Led Zeppelin I and IV, Modest Mouse's "The Moon and Antarctica", and Arcade Fire's "Funeral". First off, Zeppelin is awesome, of course, nuff said. The Modest Mouse was pretty good. They were obviously on a few drugs during this album... but it's cool. The few strange tunes are balanced with some definate catchy ones. It's cool to see how this album led into "Good News...": they cleaned up the moody druggy parts, kept the bouncy drums and hilly guitar riffs, and added some plain good joy.

Now, one album that took me by surprise was "Funeral". A couple people suggested it to me, and looking for new music, I bought it. My first listen didn't leave any hooks in me... so I moved onto Modest Mouse and Zeppelin. After getting my fill of those, I had this orange and gold album staring at me... almost challenging me. So I sat down and listened to the whole thing straight through... something I don't often do. And, I was pleasantly surprised. The album could be catalouged under Indie Rock, or Pop, but so many genres and ideas are mashed together: some pop, rock, indie, heavy metal, jazz, disco, classical, Latin and more, all in little bits here and there. Personally, the attitude of the music is very much like a jazz album: it wants your attention. It wants you to actively listen and notice all the cool things its doing. It's hard to sign along for me for some reason... but I'm always humming some little guitar part or the floating piano in the background. I'm interested to hear new stuff from Arcade Fire, as this album is very very good.

Enough reviewing and shameless advertising. Best weekend of work evar. Three nights with 22, 19, and 22 deliveries. I deposited $170 in the bank today, and have another $100 in my pocket. Yeeeeeess.

Weeks long ramble.

Whenever I start a story or writing something personal or blah blah whatever, I always feel the need to preface it with some amount of backstory. For some reason, that lightly bothers me, yet I know it's my style, so I go with it.

It's the beginning of July, about halfway through the summer. I've been earning money and spending money, and both have been pretty fun. Delivering for Papa John's is definitely a "hilly" job. Some night are fantastic, like tonight when I make $62 in bucks. Some nights are terrible, with me walking out with $11. Enough though this is a job with the only focus being to make some money, money ain't everything. I've got some colorful co-workers, all who make me laugh. The frat boy turned married store owner; the highly opinionated Latino assistant manager; the senior citizen womanizer; the Satanist teenager who answers phones; McDonald's has nothing on these characters. I've quickly affirmed the fact that 75% of people are idiots. And unfortunately, many more people than you might think live in some very low-class areas... surprises me, at least. Still, people might be stupid, and some might be not as well off, but lots of them turn out to be nice people.

After buying 4 or 5 albums, I've got some very different views on them after a few weeks of play. I originally thought Coldplay's "X&Y" was going to be amazing. Instead, I never listen to it. The album is good musically, yes, but the entire thing seems to be missing just one something. I mean, the video for "Speed of Sound" is really awesome... the visuals make the music better in multiples, and I personally think the video surpasses the music. You could take snapshots second by second, and almost every single one would make really cool backgrounds or something. I bought "Led Zeppelin I" and "Physical Graffiti", but I quickly discovered I enjoy later Zeppelin than the early stuff, although the first disc from "Physical" gets a lot of play in my car. Surprisingly, I can't get enough of "Get Behind Me Satan" and "Hot Fuss". The former from White Stripes has lots of cool variations and themes, yet has several intertwining bits and pieces; and the latter by The Killers is fun to tap along with and the silly lyrics just make me laugh.

I'm still looking for more music, though. I have a big box full of jazz stuff, but I'm just not feelin' jazz right now. I want to get Modest Mouse's "The Moon & Antarctica". Anyone have some suggestions? For some reason, I wanna get some Mogwai or Sonic Youth... anyhoos.

Book-wise, I tried reading Siddhartha, but quickly gave up. It was too heady for summertime. I finished Animal Farm fast though, and really enjoyed it. It's a strange feeling to see hyposicry over time, but it's even stranger knowing everything in that book practically happened during and after the Russian revolutions. I started up Slaughterhouse-Five, and it's... interesting thus far. Vonnegut has very different writing style than anything I've read before, and I'm really diggin' it.

And spending even more money, my wardrobe is quickly being gutted and replaced. Having a smaller closet and clothes' drawers makes it easier to decide what stays and what goes. 4 days out of the week I wear an uniform, but 1 or 2 of the other days I get to wear stuff that I picked out for myself, and actually bought for myself... it's liberating, it's strengthening, it plain feels good. Anybody who lives in a family of 5 knows that feeling doesn't come to often. I can't to get back to Tampa.

Happy Independence Day, all.

Oh, by the way, it's my birthday tomorrow.
18 = Military and power to vote
19 = ?
20 = a new decade of life
21 = Booze!
Hooray for reaching the most useless numbered birthday yet. ;)
(Thanks Martha, for the preemptive congratulations.)
(EDIT: Did I write all that? Sheesh...)

My first week or so working at Papa John's was really good, money-wise. I pulled almost $200 on two seperate weekends. But it's been all downhill since. On a Friday night, a Friday night, I left with $11. My last 5 houses had a total tip of $4. And somehow, I lost $20, which should have been my tip. I know it shouldn't be a big deal, but... it just sucks.

A delightful few days off it's been. I had a great time up in Tampa, hanging with Jenny. Got a nice shirt at the Gap for only $10 (who knew sales could be so fun?) and some hott posters for my room next year.

Having class once a week is really weird. I go there, and we're on computers, so of course I'm spending more time checking forums than listening to my teacher, however cool she is. Still, next class oughta be fun... I might get some cookies from the mall or ice cream & soda, I dunno.

And today was nice. After mowing the lawn and skipping lunch, I headed into town with both my brothers. Went to the mall, got a few more shirts and another pair of jeans. Having a whole new waredobe is pretty, neat, heh. I never really bought clothes for myself before... kinda always wore whatever my mom bought. I definately feel better walking around knowing I'm in control of my own style.

Disagression aside, I gave into my geek side and bought "Hordes of the Underdark" at Best Buy. Nothing but RPGs for a few weeks... Then, at my inspiration, us three siblings went to Friday's for dinner and Cold Stone for dessert. Now, my brothers have never been to a Cold Stone, and they apparently loved it. Coupled with a great dinner at Friday's (good food, fast service, remodeled decor), Kirs said tonight was "the best dinner and dessert he's ever had". All my fault, too. Heh. :)

EDIT: I got a replacement for my cell phone. 90%, anyone who calls me is on speakerphone. It was still under warranty, so free replacement! Hope this one works.

So I got this virus thing last Friday. My throat was so sore, it physically pained me to swallow. And then Monday, my allergies decided to kick in... making breathing and now even hearing a chore. I've felt like crap all week. My throat has gotten better, but I'm still blowing nose twice an hour and my ears are only half-working. I was the first person to "galantly" volunteer to go home from work today. ugh.

I bought Coldplay's "X&Y" along with Led Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti" on Tuesday. Coldplay's new album is good, but if you're familiar with "A Rush of Blood..." you aren't going to find anything groundbreaking. That being said, it's all very good stuff. Tracks like "Square One" and "Swimming in the Sea" make it worth the purchase. It's like the band took the formula for "A Rush" and improved on it. As for Zeppelin though, there's some new stuff, for it's time. It's 2 CDs, and I've only really listened through the first. "Houses of the Holy" and "Trampled Under Foot" keep your toes and fingers tappin', while "In the Time of My Dying" is a rocking 11 minutes. The first CD only is worth it, but it's Zeppelin... you already knew that, right? ;)

So I stayed up until 7am today. I was in the mood for McDonald's breakfast... scary, eh?

After class yesterday, I went into town, specifically south Ft. Myers around Bell Tower. Got my Starbucks fix finally at Barnes & Noble, and saw that a Cold Stone is open, and a Moe's is being built near Bell Tower. That is so awesome. Today I went back down there and bought some books: Slaughterhouse-Five, Lord of the Flies, Siddhartha, and Animal Farm. I figure I could spend less time watching TV and more time actively using my head. I've even got some Nietzsche left over from first semester that I never got to. :)

Anyways. I've talked to some people about my plans for this summer, that I'm trying to figure myself out and get over the bad and become completely comfortable with myself and etc etc. Well today, I can say that definately not the same person that started this mission. I went to Quizno's for lunch/dinner/supper, and met Steven Jacobs working there. For those that don't know, Steven & I were "best friends" in middle school. I use quotations because we had sleepovers and always talked on band trips, but he would incessingly pick on me, and was a main reason I went to Mariner (to escape that). And I walked in and saw him... and it took us a few moments of staring to realize who the other was. But for a long time, I had border-line hated his guy. I felt like crap because of what he said to me for years. And looking at him today and seeing his actions and talking with him, I realized... it doesn't matter anymore. I couldn't care less about what he said in the past. It was a part of my past... and now I'm over it. And I suppose I should be excited and joyous but nah... it's just cool. Way it oughta be.

Back to delivering tomorrow.

In order of importance, from least to most:

Working at Papa John's is nuts. Tips alone... Friday - $51, Sat - $65, Sun - $75!, Mon - $43. $234 in four days... this is crazy. Seriously.

Memorial Day, which means a time for reflection... and shopping. Bought some new stuff, and I don't plan on stopping there. My wardrobe needs an overhaul.

Saturday night, I helped close the store. My last run was about 12:15am, and a strange thing happened. I pulled up to the wrong house, so blah blah... I figured out that I should've been next door. So, walking up to the other house, I walk by the guy's car, and hear this scrambling noise from inside the car. Before I can process this fully, a grey cat launches itself from the car's open window, flys through the air in front of me with paws akimbo, lands in the bushes and dashes for the backyard. It's past midnight, I'm standing with pizza and soda in my hands, and I'm laughing my ass off.

Tonight, I has another interesting last run. Around 9:30-ish, I pull up to an apartment complex... not terrible, but nothing fancy. (Details...) I walked up to the 2nd floor, knocked on the door, and a guy in his mid-20s I believe opened the door. I said the price, and he asked if I would come inside and check something. (Immediate warning inside my head went off.) I looked inside the door, and saw a large folder open with many pages of pencil... numbers and words, not very good quality handwriting... and the guy started talking about the last time he ordered his dinner it was under $10 bucks and didn't understand, and I explained the new 75 cent delivery charge, yadda yadda... But I quickly realized from his speech that something wasn't "right" with him. If in high school, you might call him ESE. So, we joked for a sec, I made change and he gave me a tip, and I walked down the stairs with a sense of slight sadness, but also one of happiness and respect. I mean, here is a man with some type of disability, who lives by himself, who writes down and checks all of his spendings, and makes enough to order pizza pretty often. His place might have been kind of sparse, but I think he's doing very well off in this world. He made me smile at least.

Got this funky, bad headache around 8:30 tonight. It got really bad at some points, and didn't go anyway until 11-ish. I hate that.

Netted another $25 tonight. Delivering pizzas part-time makes the day seem really weird. I'm used to waking up early, going to school then going off to McDonald's, or waking up fucking early on weekends and going straight to work. After 8 hours of work is when I usually go home and relax. But now, I wake up and watch ER for a bit, make some lunch, watch some Star Trek, and then go to work, and only for 4-6 hours. It's nice, but still just a little weird.

Drinking slightly watered-down Mountain Dew makes me think me of vodka. Hm.

god, I'm random.

It's been 10 days since my last update. Feels a lot longer then that.

I've been the posterboy for laziness in the last two weeks. Productivity = close to zero. Well, physically, not mentally. But that's exactly what I wanted.

My job hunt ended tonight. I swore off fast-food service, so McD's here. I almost became an "exterior upkeeper" for a small country club, but I opted out to become a Papa John's delivery guy. So, it's $6.15 (I think) an hour, but lots of tips. (And lots of free pizza! :D )

Star Wars Episode III: Better then the first two, definately. Maybe I'll write more later.

Ciao.

Summer Class, Go!

So, I'm posting right now from my summer class, "Intro to Computers in Education". I don't have my laptop here, but the class is being taught in an alright computer lab. No AIM, but everything else works on the Internet. There's about 15 people in the class... and I'm the only guy. Even the teacher is female. This gross imbalance was talked about within 10 minutes of class starting. I'll pull my weight though. I probably know more about computers than everyone else combined.

Time to type a letter in Word... oy. FGCU Eagles, wheeee.
